Storm Season Is Coming — Is Your Home Ready?
Nebraska storm season typically runs from April through September, bringing severe thunderstorms, hail, high winds, and even tornadoes. The best time to prepare your home is before the first storm hits. Here’s a practical checklist to help Lincoln homeowners protect their property and minimize damage this season.
Roof Checklist
Schedule a professional roof inspection. Catching loose shingles, cracked flashing, or deteriorating seals now means they won’t become major problems during a storm. Check your attic for signs of existing leaks — water stains, damp insulation, or daylight coming through. Ensure your roof vents are secure and not blocked by debris.
Gutter Checklist
Clean out all gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters cause water to back up under your shingles and along your fascia. Check for sagging sections and reattach or replace loose brackets. Verify downspouts are directing water away from your foundation — at least 4 feet from the house.
Siding Checklist
Walk around your home and look for cracks, gaps, or loose panels. Any opening in your siding is an entry point for wind-driven rain. Check caulking around windows and doors — recaulk any gaps or cracks. Look for signs of moisture damage including discoloration, warping, or soft spots.
Fencing Checklist
Check all fence posts for stability. Wiggle each post — if it moves, it needs to be reinforced or replaced before high winds hit. Tighten or replace loose hardware on gates. Secure or remove any loose items near your fence line that could become projectiles in high wind.
Window Checklist
Test all windows to ensure they open, close, and lock properly. A window that doesn’t seal tightly lets in water during driving rain. Inspect weatherstripping and replace if worn or cracked. Check for cracked or foggy glass — this indicates seal failure and reduced impact resistance.
General Preparation
Trim tree branches that hang over your roof or near your siding — they can break off in high winds. Secure outdoor furniture, grills, and decorations that could become airborne. Review your homeowner’s insurance policy to confirm your coverage and deductible amounts before you need to file a claim.
